AI Rating(4.2/5)

Users like Puppet for reliable configuration management, strong scalability, compliance, and automation in large enterprise environments. They dislike its steep learning curve, complexity, and the fact that it can be hard for less technical teams to use.

Expert Opinion

Expert Rating(4.5/5)

Puppet remains a strong choice for organizations that need disciplined infrastructure configuration and continuous enforcement across large, heterogeneous environments. Its biggest advantage is depth: desired-state management, automation, reporting, RBAC, compliance, patching, APIs, and extensive reusable modules are integrated into a mature ecosystem.

The web console improves accessibility compared with command-line-only workflows, while agent-based and agentless options provide useful flexibility. Enterprise Advanced adds particularly valuable capabilities around vulnerability remediation, compliance enforcement, impact analysis, and observability integrations.

The main limitation is complexity. Puppet has a substantial learning curve, particularly around its declarative language, architecture, modules, and larger-scale implementation. This is also reflected in user feedback, where setup and learning are recurring criticisms.

Verdict: Puppet is best suited to infrastructure, DevOps, platform engineering, and security teams managing substantial server estates where consistency, governance, compliance, and automated remediation matter more than simplicity.
