Australian cloud security, compliance, and governance company Cloud Conformity has been acquired by multinational cybersecurity firm Trend Micro for $US70 million. The Cloud Conformity solutions will be available through Trend Micro immediately, according to the company.

Trend Micro says the deal will broaden its services to include security issues around cloud infrastructure misconfiguration, the area where nearly all successful cloud attacks occur and what Cloud Conformity specialises in.

The Sydney-based company, with local customers already including Qantas, NIB, and Virgin Australia, offers a “continuous assurance tool” for Amazon Web Services and this year was named as the AWS Technology Partner of the Year.

The AWS solution provides automated checks of cloud infrastructure with a single management layer providing oversight of the entire AWS infrastructure.

Cloud Conformity is currently developing the same solution for Azure, and Google Cloud.

Cyber Posture

While public cloud providers have a good track record on security, problems still occur on the customer side, typically through poor cyber posture.

According to Gartner, 99 per cent of successful attacks on cloud services are the result of “customer misconfiguration, mismanagement and mistakes” and the analysts recommend security leaders invest in cloud security posture management processes and tools like Cloud Conformity because the tools can reduce most of the related security incidents.

“We are excited for the opportunities that will come from being part of the leading cloud security provider – amplifying what we do best, while allowing our offerings to expand in ways we couldn’t have done on our own,” said Michael Watts, chief executive officer of Cloud Conformity (pictured above, left).

“We think customers will love this simplified approach to security and compliance across their entire cloud environment, including AWS, Azure and Google Cloud – providing security guardrails to let them go faster and do more.”

Eva Chen, chief executive officer for Trend Micro, said the company has been focused on offering integrated cyber solutions while other vendors “are now attempting to stitch together disparate cloud technologies”.

“As more enterprises move to the cloud, our customers feel they’re operating amid a wild-west approach to cloud implementations that leave them with unmanaged risk. As an AWS technology partner of the year for 2019, Cloud Conformity understands these implementations and the risks. Their offering perfectly complements our own portfolio and provides immediate value to customers. Both the people and technology are a great fit for Trend Micro.”
