Swimming Australia is partnering with Amazon Web Services to enhance the performance of swimmers and improve audience experiences. Data and insights from the Amazon cloud services provider will help uncover talent for 2024 Olympics in Paris, according to Swimming Australia.

The country’s peak body for swimming announced the deal today. AWS has similar deals with other sporting codes, including the Wallabies, Formula One and the NFL in America.

The public cloud provider offers several cloud computing and data services, which swimming Australia says will now be used to “optimise athlete performance at critical junctures of the race, create new swimming meet formats, connect the national tribe of swimmers to better identify talent, and provide more meaningful fan experiences”.

Around 4.5 million Australians participate annually in swimming, with Swimming Australia representing over 900 clubs and 90,000 members. 

“As we continue to grow as a sport, Swimming Australia is always seeking new ways to better understand its athletes, so we’re excited to be working with AWS in this data and analytics space,” Leigh Russell, chief executive at Swimming Australia told Which-50.

“The more insights and knowledge we uncover will help us strengthen our high performance pathways all the way up to the elite level, which will put us in a better position to make informed decisions and fast track future plans.

“The challenge for Swimming Australia was being able to access data and insights in real-time for fan engagement purposes. With AWS, we can bring fans one step closer to the race action and achieve more with technology. We are now able to modernise our sport’s business operations and work on a number of projects that will help to connect and build the swimming tribe, bringing incredible moments of inspiration to Australians through the sport of swimming.”

Applying the unique Amazon Working Backwards methodology, our team will work with Swimming Australia to identify innovation opportunities by leveraging big data technologies to collect, analyse, and share data, that can then be used to drive new projects that will bring swimmers, fans, and the community closer to the race action.”
