Silos are busted, time to market accelerated and IT resources are much simpler to utilise when organisations have an effective integration platform as a service (iPaaS) regime, according to a Dell Boomi commissioned study by Forrester.
In the study to assess the economic impact of shifting to the cloud, Forrester created an aggregate company using insights from six Dell Boomi customers.

Senior executives from CPM, manufacturing, travel, energy, construction, and media and entertainment sectors were interviewed, with four respondents from the US and one each from Canada and Australia.
The department heads and senior managers interviewed for the study revealed a number of significant problems they needed to overcome.
For instance, they revealed that information silos contributed to a sense of chaos as well as slowing down operations. According to one of the executives interviewed, “There were just a myriad of applications in our business, and our ability to stitch them together and integrate them was key to our success. We wanted to get away from the hundreds if not thousands of point-to point integrations that did not talk to each other.”
The study’s respondents — all drawn from IT organisations — also flagged that they struggled to respond to business needs and, as such, often missed opportunities to respond when new initiatives were presented.
The authors noted, “Integration projects required heavy involvement from the IT team and took a long time to complete. Integration engineers were strapped for time and had little capacity to take new projects.”
There were also concerns over the quality of data, since decentralised integration efforts and legacy solutions would often require custom code. These were sometimes so complex that it was hard to verify the quality of the data received from these integrations.
A senior manager in the business technology group told Forrester, “Among our biggest concerns were the integrity of the data, the reliability of the data, or all the measures of data quality that you can think of. To put it bluntly, before Dell Boomi came in we literally had zero data quality metrics.”
To overcome these problems, the organisations needed an approach that would allow them to gain data consistency and accuracy across a myriad of systems.
They sought a solution that could:
- Help developers build simple, effective, and robust integrations between systems;
- Empower IT to respond in real time to business opportunities and challenges faced by the organisations;
- Enable organisations to connect easily and reliably to external partners, vendors, and suppliers;
- Assist organisations in deriving insights from massive amounts of data from multiple sources, applications, people, or devices.
Once a unified iPaaS was put in place the organisations were able to address many of these concerns.
According to one of the interviewees, “We use Dell Boomi as glue for all the different data sources. What I get is an elegant solution and, more importantly, a smooth customer experience.”
The authors say that having implemented a single and robust iPaaS, IT teams found the speed of integration projects increased significantly. The director of system integration at a media and advertising company reported, “I’m able to provide my customers and business owners better service because I am able to deploy a solution or an integration faster. My internal customers are happier because instead of having a four-week project, I just crashed it down to three or four days. I’m not reinventing the wheel, and I have a very flexible platform that allows me to do it.”
In particular, Dell Boomi’s low-code approach and what Forrester describes as an easy-to-use platform helped optimise the use of IT resources.
Respondents said they were able to reduce the number of contractors and offshore teams supporting integrations and related infrastructure — which gave integration teams the capacity to support other initiatives, such as workflow optimisation and API design and management.
