The intersection between the fundraiser, the charity, and the technology platform is one that highlights the importance of breaking down silos and showcasing the symbiotic relationship that takes place across sectors.
We hosted a panel of three, to showcase this very relationship. We spoke to Pieter Lindhout, the former CEO of Suncorp Life Insurance and fundraiser for the charity Batyr, Amelia Hart, the Head of Partnerships Fundraising of Batyr, and Martyn Ryan, the CEO of the tech platform Benojo. Batyr is a charity working to smash the stigma around mental health by running education programs in schools and universities. They work to engage young people through sharing “lived experience stories”.
Hart says, “We know that peer support and sharing is really powerful. Hearing a story from a young person that looks like you and has maybe been through something similar in an experience to you really resonates to understand that you’re not alone and that your experience might be unique to you, but you’re not unique in that. And that reaching out for help and finding pathways to seek help is really important.”
We rely on charities to solve the world’s most dire causes, not least of which is youth suicide and mental illness. However, without fundraisers and volunteers, many Not-For-Profits would not be able to fulfil their organisation’s mission where their business model may rely on donations for up to 100 per cent of their funding.

Lindhout is raising funds for Batyr by embarking on a 520km walk, over 33 days*, reminiscent of the Coo-ee March that Australian volunteers walked in 1915, when they enlisted recruits to fight in WW1. As many of these soldiers returned to Australia with debilitating PTSD, Lindhout has chosen to recreate this walk in order to fundraise for Batyr and their mental health programs for young Australians.
Highlighting the importance of the community fundraiser, Hart says, “What Pete’s doing is he’s sharing it with his network and actually celebrating what he’s doing and raising awareness for us, not just money, but awareness and spreading the message of what we do. In small to medium Not-for- Profits it’s really important that word of mouth has a lot of credibility behind it. So Pete’s endorsing us and getting behind us, which is phenomenal.”
Digitising fundraising and volunteering is the final piece of the puzzle in transforming the charitable sector to become more efficient and effective. Lindhout is using the tech platform Benojo to raise funds for Batyr. Benojo works with the charitable sector offering them access to affordable fundraising tools that allow charities and fundraisers to reach a broad and qualified audience.
Ryan says, “It’s all about helping understand how to use technology, how to develop strategy around it and make sure that when you do go out and you do address the market, that you’re having the right conversations and you are really sort of putting people in the position where they can create the most impact.”
