Apple is expanding its services business, adding a streaming platform, gaming subscription service, an expanded version of its news app and a credit card.

The company unveiled a plethora of services overnight during an event at its headquarters.

Commentators suggest the company is reaching out in other fields to try and drive its growth as its iPhone sales have slowed in recent years.

Apple TV+

The Cupertino company is planning on going head-to-head with Amazon and Netflix with the launch of its subscription service Apple TV +.

Its streaming service will be an extension of Apple TV featuring exclusive original shows, movies and documentaries.

This service will be available in Australia when it launches.

Apple said a number of these new shows will be debuting in Spring with the new Apple TV app and Apple TV channels being released in May.

The iPhone creator will be allowing users to install the Apple TV Plus app on Samsung, LG and Sony smart TVs as well as on their own devices.

Users can subscribe to and watch new Apple TV channels — paying for only services they want, all on demand, available on and offline.

Pricing will be released later in the year.

Apple credit card

Apple has launched its first ever credit card, Apple Card in partnership with Goldman Sachs and Mastercard.

The Cupertino company said there will not be any fees on this card. Apple will be simplifying the application process, encouraging customers to pay less interest and offering a new level of privacy of security.

It will also be giving cash back through its Daily Cash scheme which gives back a percentage of every purchase as cash on customers’ Apple Cash card each day.

Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay said, “Apple Card is designed to help customers lead a healthier financial life, which starts with a better understanding of their spending so they can make smarter choices with their money, transparency to help them understand how much it will cost if they want to pay over time and ways to help them pay down their balance.”

Customers are able to sign up for the card through the Apple wallet and can pay through the app.

Users can see and analyse their spending through their iPhones. The credit card will be initially available to US customers mid-2019.

Apple News +

Apple News + is a magazine subscription service where users can get access to more than 300 popular magazines, newspaper and digital publications through its News app.

At the moment the service is only available in the US and Canada.

Some of the publications available include Vogue, Elle, The Wall Street Journal and National Geographic Magazine.

Lauren Kern, editor-in-chief of Apple News said, “We’re committed to supporting quality journalism, and with Apple News+, we want to celebrate the great work being done by magazines and news outlets.

“We think the breadth and quality of publications within Apple News+ will encourage more people to discover stories and titles they may never have come across before.

The subscription costs US $9.99 a month.

Apple Arcade

The technology giant has launched its first ever gaming subscription service, Apple Arcade.

The service can be used on mobile, desktop and through Apple TV. It will feature more than 100 new and exclusive games.

Pricing has not been released yet.
