Chinese tech behemoth Alibaba Group today announced the addition of Temenos banking software and the Vertica analytics platform to its public cloud offering, Alibaba Cloud.

Both new partners say their customers are increasingly demanding the flexible and scalable qualities of pubic cloud.

The partnership with the European software giant means its core banking product is now certified on Alibaba Cloud and financial institutions will be able to run Temenos’ mission-critical core banking applications on the chinese public cloud.

Temenos is used by more than 3,000 financial companies and already markets itself as a cloud-native and API-first technology. But Alibaba says the deal will give users of the banking software better access to the scalability and agility of a public cloud.

Amazon still dominates the public cloud market but other providers like Microsoft, Google and Alibaba are catching up. In APAC especially Alibaba is growing well – 80 per cent year on year the company said today ahead of its annual user conference.

Alibaba says the current pandemic has accelerated the shift to public cloud even further and both incumbent banks and smaller challengers are increasingly relying on Infrastructure as a service.

Temenos and Alibaba say they will work together to assist banks in leveraging public cloud technology. The European company already counts Westpac, Bankwest and me Bank among its APAC customers.

“Cloud is the enabler for change; and particularly during this challenging climate – it gives financial institutions the agility and the resilience they need,” said Philip Barnett, Director, Strategic Growth, Temenos.

“Working with Alibaba Cloud we will help banks to elastically scale based on demand and remove operational complexities.”

Vertica analytics platform

Vertica announced today the launch of the Vertica Analytics Platform on the Alibaba Cloud Platform to address what it says is a growing demand for scalable analytics and Machine Learning on huge amounts of data.

The move means subscription pricing hosted on the Alibaba Cloud and potentially a more scalable product for Vertica.

“We are glad to bring world-leading database solutions to Alibaba Cloud such as Vertica,” said Dr. Li Feifei, President of the Database Products Business Unit, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence.

“Customers now can deploy the high-performance analytics and machine learning product at scale easily, while adopting pricing that matches their needs.”

Customers with a hybrid environment will be able to bring their own Vertica license (BYOL) to Alibaba Cloud.

“We’re experiencing increasing demand from customers around the globe to adopt Vertica for their most demanding analytical workloads, particularly in Asia,” said Colin Mahony, SVP & GM, Vertica.

“We are so excited to offer Vertica on the Alibaba Cloud Marketplace to meet our customers’ interest and demonstrate our commitment to our strategic partnership with Alibaba Cloud.”
